Big Brother 28 Finale Recap: Devens Wins Everything
Big Brother 28 ended Thursday night with a Survivor player winning Big Brother, a school counselor bluffing her way into the Final Two, and Drew learning that promises become flexible when $750,000 enters the room.
Taylor had won Part One of the final HOH by outlasting Devens and Drew on a rolling log. In Part Two, Devens defeated Drew in a slingshot competition. That left Taylor and Devens facing off in “Back in My Day,” where they watched videos from jurors and identified the false statement.
Devens led 5-3 with one question remaining, securing the final HOH and the season’s last eviction. All week, he had promised Drew that their father-son partnership would reach the end. Then Taylor offered a sharper argument: take her, guarantee both finalists prize money, and avoid a jury where she and LaLa would support Drew.
Devens chose Taylor.
He told Drew that his true alliance had to be his family and that Taylor’s warning made Drew too dangerous. Drew immediately dissolved into tears, because nothing says “good game” like realizing the man you saved at Final Four has just converted your loyalty into third place. Still, Drew told Devens it was the correct move and later voted for him to win, proving his emotional maturity may be stronger than his threat assessment.
The jury consisted of LaLa, Angela, Barrett, Yash, Melody, Dee, and evicted Drew. Taylor argued that she had survived the block six times and represented faith, courage, and perseverance. Devens emphasized his competition record, strategy, and willingness to make difficult moves, declaring that his hands were covered in blood. This was not metaphorically comforting, but it was an accurate summary.
Taylor also asked Drew for his vote after being betrayed. Unfortunately, Drew remained loyal to the person who had just evicted him, a final demonstration of the exact quality Devens used against him.
The vote was not close. Angela, Barrett, Yash, Melody, Dee, and Drew voted for Devens. LaLa cast the only vote for Taylor. Devens won 6-1, becoming the first Survivor player to win Big Brother. Taylor received the $75,000 runner-up prize, along with the satisfaction of knowing her last-minute jury threat worked even if it may have been a bluff...the world will never know.
Then America handed Devens another victory. He beat fellow top-three vote getters Drew and Yash to become America’s Favorite Houseguest, earning an additional $50,000. Combined with his $750,000 grand prize and the $10,000 he received for unleashing the Pharaoh’s Curse, Devens left with $810,000. Apparently pressing the button marked “ancient curse” was excellent financial planning.
The finale closed with Julie announcing that Big Brother has been renewed for two more seasons. This gives future contestants time to study the lessons of Season 28: win when necessary, never assume a Survivor player will remain a lovable underdog, and do not keep the person everyone keeps warning will beat you.
Most importantly, never trust a television father when he starts talking about his real family.
